This qualification covers a range of essential and higher-level accounting techniques and disciplines. Students will learn and develop skills needed for a range of financial processes, including maintaining cost accounting records, advanced bookkeeping and the preparation of financial reports and returns.

Entry requirements

Students can start with any qualification depending on existing skills and experience. For the best chance of success, we recommend that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and maths.

Exemptions

 Those who can provide evidence of gaining a previous, relevant qualification from an external awarding body may not have to sit all AAT assessments.

 We believe that if you’ve already studied qualification units featuring the same content, you shouldn’t need to duplicate work. This means students can fast track onto the most appropriate AAT qualification.

 Students may be eligible for exemptions if they have:

  •     previous finance or accounting qualifications
  •     an accounting or finance degree.

ATHE Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

This qualification provides foundational knowledge and practical skills in accounting, suitable for learners aiming to progress to higher education or entry-level accounting roles. It forms part of the International Access Programme.

What it covers:

  • Introduction to accounting principles
  • Financial accounting applications
  • Cost and management accounting
  • Ethical, social, and political issues in accounting
  • Study skills development including critical thinking, research, and IT use

What could this qualification lead to:

  • Progression to ATHE Level 4 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Accounting
  • Higher education (e.g., first year of a degree programme)
  • Roles such as accounting assistant or junior finance clerk
  • IFA Direct Programme towards IFA membership
  • Higher apprenticeships

Entry requirements:

  • Aged 16+
  • Typically: 5 GCSEs (grade C/4+) or equivalent
  • Level 2 English and Maths skills recommended
  • Recognition of prior learning (RPL) considered for mature learners
  • English proficiency (if not first language): IELTS 5.5 or CEFR B2

ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Accounting

A 120-credit qualification offering a broader and more in-depth understanding of accounting, including tax, law, and economics, ideal for those seeking comprehensive preparation for higher-level roles or education.

What it covers:

  • Financial Accounting 1 and 2
  • Budgetary Control
  • Cost and Management Accounting

What could this qualification lead to:

  • Employment in accounting technician roles (e.g., Bookkeeper, Accounts Assistant)
  • Progression to Level 5 or Extended Diploma
  • Entry into the IFA Direct Programme/li>
  • Potential admission into the second year of a degree depending on HEI requirements
  • Higher-level apprenticeships or HTQs

Entry requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • Typically: A-levels with 5 GCSEs or ATHE Level 3 Diploma or equivalent
  • Access to HE or international equivalent qualifications
  • Relevant work experience considered for mature learners (RPL)
  • English proficiency: IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
